The Biggest Losers

Alan and I have been on a “diet” for about a week now.

Before I go on, I want to mention something very important (and healthy):
I love my husband for being loving and supportive, never once having ever told me I need to lose weight, and always telling me I’m the most beautiful woman alive, because he really believes it. (I just don’t necessarily personally agree, but that’s ok. I’d be a stuck up bitch to believe I’m the hottest woman alive, and a naive bitch, at that. <3) I also find him extremely and utterly handsome, and as damn near perfect as men can be made.

Basically, we’ve cut out unrefined carbs completely, and we are eating less than 150 carbs per day. This is a huge change from our diet of subway, popcorn, bread, frozen pizzas, and tons of margaritas and/or beer. Wow, just thinking about what we USED to eat makes me feel thinner.

While Alan was deployed in Iraq, I went on a crazy health nut phase where I completed between 3 and 5 exercise videos ON-DEMAND each day via my television. I lost about 5 lbs, and I was stoked on it! Well, when he came home, I gained AT LEAST that back. (At least I was prepared.) I wanted to be able to eat, drink, and chill with him as best I knew how.

But something’s gotta give.

We both know that spending the rest of our lives together means that we want to spend it together. This means, both of us need to be healthy, and healty means changing some serious lifestyle and food habits.

We got a gym membership before the wedding, and that was our first step. The gym is right next to our apartment, and we’ve been going there regularly since November. I can run 2 miles in 18 minutes, and my 5k time lingers at about 30 minutes (3.1 miles.) Not bad. I’m not training for a marathon, here, though. I’m just trying to lose a few pounds.

Alan sweats it out in the gym like a champ, too. We both really do. It’s just our style. :) We have intense, amazing workouts together, and it’s a very healthy and fulfilling bonding experience. Still, asthetics mean SOMETHING, and exercise alone won’t do it when we’re packing down 4 or 5 beers and some pizza. Plus, I know it’d be easier to run that 5k with a few extra pounds on me…

So, we found the light. It became clear about a week ago that running alone was not going to result in weight loss. I’ve been focusing on various other aspects of the healthy “experience”, particularly changing our diet for the better. (Since I cook and choose most of our grocery selections, I’m really in charge of this, anyways.) Alan has been amazingly patient, and enjoying the new selections with few complaints. :)

I have to give all the credit in the world to Alan for agreeing to go through this with me. I know the first few days were tough, and it was hilarious and cute watching him sneak spoonfuls of peanut butter and bran muffins. :) He really has been supportive. I have no problem with how he looks, but my encouragement for him all along has been “if I lose 20 lbs, do you really wanna be stuck at the same ole’ weight?” (and I always say it with a smile.) :) Besides, anything and everything I’ve read has said that guys have an easier time shaping up… Be that true or not, I know he can do it just as well as I can. Especially since his meals now consist of light seafood, veggies, and some beans. (The bran muffins are all gone, and the peanut butter is “restricted.” hahaha <3)

We’ll see how the next couple of weeks go.
